Biography

Tenor Demetrios Jussi Tsinopoulos was born and raised in Greece, the son of a Greek-American father and a Finnish mother. This multicultural and multilingual heritage was instilled in him from an early age.

He was introduced to the world of opera by his uncle, tenor Antonio Theba, and his aunt, former actress and dramaturge Paya Veaki. After his uncle's early death, he was admitted to the renowned National Conservatory of Athens, where he studied voice with Despoina Kalafati. Concurrently, he pursued an acting degree at the prestigious Veaki Drama School, thus laying a solid foundation in both vocal and dramatic performance.

After completing his studies in Greece, he moved to New York City to continue his training in operatic singing. There, he became a student of internationally recognized tenor and pedagogue Jack LiVigni. He deepened his artistic skills by working with several esteemed teachers and coaches, including Salvatore Fisichella, with whom he completed an intensive masterclass in Rome and received certification for his vocal and artistic achievement. He also worked with celebrated bass Dimitri Kavrakos, pianist and long-time Pavarotti collaborator William Hicks, and Maestro William Vendice. More recently, his artistic and technical development has been guided by tenor Giovanni Ribichesu.

Demetrios Jussi Tsinopoulos has given over 200 performances on opera and concert stages, presenting opera arias and art songs in a wide range of languages, styles, and musical traditions. This breadth of experience has shaped him into a versatile and expressive artist with a particular affinity for both dramatic and concert repertoire.

During his years in the United States, he performed regularly in opera and concert productions. He made his U.S. debut in May 2015 at Carnegie Hall, creating the role of the High Priest in Porphyra, a Greek opera by B. Chrissochos. In 2016, he made his Lincoln Center debut in the title role of Herakles in Olympic Flame by P. Karousos, marking the first time a Greek opera was performed at Lincoln Center. He later reprised the role in an open-air performance in Athens Square Park, New York.

That same year, he was named a recipient of the 2016 Cultural Grant from the American-Scandinavian Foundation, representing Finland and singing songs by Jean Sibelius at the award ceremony. He also performed in Pazardjik, Bulgaria, under the auspices of UNESCO with a program of arias and songs.

In 2017, he was a featured performer at Finland's 100th anniversary celebration in New York City, organized by the Finlandia Foundation. He regularly sang at Finnish Independence Day celebrations and charity events, performing works by Sibelius and other Finnish and Scandinavian composers. During the same period, he also performed in Marco Bozzari / Markos Botsaris by P. Carrer, including performances as part of the opera's modern rediscovery in the United States.

For his artistic activity and cultural contributions, he was twice honored by UNESCO for his services to culture and classical music and recognized as an international ambassador of Hellenic classical music.

In 2019, he organized and sang in a major benefit concert at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center, raising $20,000 for the Hellenic Relief Foundation in Greece, which later acknowledged his commitment and efforts.

After the pandemic years, he moved to Europe in 2022 to further develop his international career. Shortly after relocating, he made two significant role debuts: B.F. Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly with the North Wales Opera Company, directed by Peter Crockford, and Alfredo Germont in Verdi's La Traviata with PiccolaOpera in Zurich, directed by Salvatore Cicero.

In February 2023, Demetrios Jussi Tsinopoulos appeared as the Priest in the all-European premiere of Joel Mandelbaum's contemporary opera The Village in Hamburg, staged by Alexander Mottok. In 2024, he made his acting debut in Munich as Lucheni in Georg Stampfer's Sissi. His recent and upcoming engagements include Evrimachos in Odysseus – Das Musical in Munich and concert appearances such as Musical Meets Magie at the Festspielhaus Neuschwanstein.

Demetrios Jussi Tsinopoulos's repertoire encompasses opera, concert, oratorio, and musical theatre. He continues to build an international career distinguished by dramatic commitment, stylistic versatility, and a deep connection to Greek, Scandinavian, and Italian traditions.
